Your baby has come into the world knowing how to feed well. They are very clever!
There are some things you can do that will allow them to do this.
Whether your baby is feeding from your breast or a bottle, they will feed more comfortably when they feel secure.
When your baby is bottle-feeding, the things that will help them feed efficiently are;
- holding them in a semi-sitting position, tipped back just slightly
- sitting in good alignment (head, shoulders, hips in a straight line)
- supporting them behind their shoulders so that they are free to tip their head back slightly, to help them swallow freely
- having the baby's ears slightly higher than the bottle, to prevent milk travelling along the eustacian tubes, which may increase the possibility of ear infections
This feeling of security and support is the first step in allowing your baby to feed comfortably, both for you and them!
